Art Museums and Galleries Near Aspen
The Aspen Art Museum presents international contemporary art through exhibitions, education, programs, and community activities. A new building is currently under construction at the corner of South Spring Street and Hyman Avenue in downtown Aspen. Exhibitions include video, photography, sculpture, and paintings from established and emerging artists.
Many locals like the lift ticket/museum ticket collaboration between the Aspen Art Museum and Aspen Skiing Company. In 2013 ski-lift tickets which usually just consist of a logo, a bar code and an expiration date had limited editions of Mark Grotjahn’s art, off-kilter cardboard masks that he’s created over the past decade. Some are made from boxes that held 12-packs of beer or art supplies, with noses formed from empty toilet-paper rolls, all painted in vibrant colors. Four painted bronze masks sit atop Aspen’s four ski mountains. The artist called the images intentionally childlike: “They should be happy and celebratory and make people happy.”

We recommend a free art walk event that occurs on the first Thursday of every month that is sponsored by Aspen Sojourner Magazine between 3 and 7 p.m. The open house “walk” is a casual way to see Aspen’s art galleries. Look for the red balloons outside participating galleries in downtown Aspen and Aspen Highlands.
