Jeep tours or guided hummer tours allow you to get out and enjoy the scenery including high alpine tundra, forests, meadows and lakes. Jeep tours typically allow 4 passengers and hummers allow 6 passengers. These tours get your close to wildlife, vegetation, and many times involve educational discussions from a knowledgeable guide about geology, history, flora, fauna. These trips are a great alternative to hiking or biking, as it allows a laid-back, exertion-free approach to exploring. Some of our favorite places to visit are Ashcroft Ghost Town, Independence Pass, Watson Divide, Snowmass Creek Valley, Red Mountain, and McLain Flats.
Here are some great trip ideas to consider:
- Aspen Mountain: You will travel through Blue spruce forests, ski lifts, to get to the top of Aspen Mountain at 11,212 feet. Here you can see Maroon Bells wilderness, the Continental Divide and the most beautiful peaks in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. You will probably travel Richmond Ridge where you see the Continental Divide on one side and the Castle Creek and Conundrum Canyons on the other. On the decent through Little Annie Basin, you will see old mines and other structures dating back to Aspen’s early days. In early summer there are beautiful wildflowers here.
- Elk Mountain Wilderness: Historic Burlingame Cabin is located on Snowmass Mountain. Trips here usually offer food, campfire, live music, and S’mores where you can watch the sunset across the Roaring Fork Valley.
- Woody Creek and historic Lenado: See Woody Creek, where Hunter Thompson hung out. Then go to the old lumber and mining town of Lenado, and finish the trip at the summit of Larkspur Mountain where you can see all four local ski areas, the Continental Divide, the Maroon Bells, and the entire Elk Mountain Range.
- Taylor Pass: This is one of the most beautiful valleys in our area and it starts up the Castle Creek valley. On this trip you will see Aspen forests, a field of wild geraniums, and evidence of avalanches. Make sure to see the ghost town of Ashcroft. Take the rugged Express Creek to Taylor Lake where you will see the most spectacular views of Colorado’s fourteeners.
- Independence Pass: At 12,096 feet this is the highest paved crossing of the Continental Divide. On the way to Independence pass are several popular walks including: Weller Lake, the ice caves at the Grottos, the Braille Trail, and the historic ghost town of Independence. Ask about the sheer cliffs, avalanche chutes, the historical town of Independence.
