A Mini-Guide to Aspen in January
January is one of the most popular times to visit Aspen and there is a good reason for it. This snow-filled month offers a plethora of events and activities that bring people from around the globe to our small and luxurious ski town. Because we are so excited for this upcoming month (and we want you to get excited too), we have created a small guide detailing the most prominent events, and the varying activities that they offer.
Friday Morning Uphill Breakfast Club (every Friday starting January 4th)
Catherine Aeppel
Friday Morning Uphill Breakfast Club is truly a unique Aspen experience. Hike up Buttermilk Mountain every Friday of the month and enjoy breakfast at the Cliffhouse restaurant. Breakfast will be offered from 8:45am-10am, featuring a plethora of items including an oatmeal and yogurt station, dry quick oats with a toppings bar, and a la carte hot breakfast items. This event is a great way to get in an early morning workout with unparalleled views, and get in some of the first tracks of the ski day.
Wintersköl (January 10th-January 13th)
Jordan Curet
Wintersköl is Aspen’s annual “toast to winter,” a true celebration of winter in the heart of the rocky mountains. This celebration of winter dates back to 1951, putting it in its 67th annual celebration. The 4 day festival is filled with festivities around town as well as Aspen’s four mountains. Some notable activities include Winterfest, Wintersculpt, a canine fashion show, fireworks, snow sculptures, bonfires, film screenings, and much more. Wintersköl is truly a unique Aspen tradition that any winter lover will relish in.
Gay Ski Week (January 13th-January 20th)
Matt Power
Aspen Gay Ski Week is coming up on its 41st year, making it the longest running gay ski week in the world. The event spans over 7 days and offers fun-filled activities for all. This week is jam-packed with events, including concerts, parties, films, comedy, symposiums, and dinners throughout the week. To get the full experience we recommend grabbing a pass, which offers access to four mountain of terrain, special lunches, receptions, ice shows, and even more parties.
Full Moon Dinners at Cliffhouse (January 20th)
Jordan Curet
Full Moon Dinners at Cliffhouse are another unique Aspen opportunity to experience an exclusive meal after a beautiful hike up the mountain. For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, skin or hike up Buttermilk Mountain to enjoy a special dinner under the full moon that you cannot experience anywhere else. Cliffhouse will be offering a la carte dinner options, snacks and a cash bar from 5-8pm. Get there early to enjoy free hot chocolate from 5-6pm over a roaring fire. Unlike the Friday Morning Uphill Breakfast Club also offered by Cliffhouse, this experience will only be offered this one night in order to take full advantage of the full moon from a unique and picturesque location.
2019 X Games (January 24th-January 27th)
Jeremy Swanson
The X Games are a world-renowned event that bring in the best extreme skiers and snowboarders from around the world to our own Buttermilk Mountain. Along with the best action sports, the event also brings in a music and festival experience at the base of the mountain and in town. The 2019 X Games are bringing in musical performances by Lil Wayne, Louis The Child, The Chainsmokers and Kygo. This weekend is definitely one of Aspen’s most prominent and well-known events, and one that any true mountain and music lover will want to experience.
